Andrew is a kind and creative soul who loves life.  His Aunt Nicole says “Andrew is one of the sweetest, silliest kids I know.  He embodies how humans are supposed to be.”  His teachers describe him as a kiddo who takes it all in and leads others to new perspectives.  Andrew’s friends describe him as “fun”, “Funny” and “the best.”  “He is a true friend- deeply caring and genuinely thoughtful.”  Andrew’s 13-year old sister Emma says “He’s always there to back me up. He's my everything--my Andrew.”

Unfortunately, Andrew suffered go-cart accident in March. We expected it to take a long time for him to get better. Contrary to these expectations, two months later, Andrew was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive connective tissue cancer: rhabdomyosarcoma. None of us thought this was possible, but it has quickly become our reality.  CLICK HERE for more of the story from Andrew’s Grandmom Marion who is at his side daily.

A full year of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery will ensue.  As I write this Andrew is recovering from Week 6 of 52 weeks of chemotherapy that is targeting the sarcoma in his lungs and pelvis. Andrew has been involved in his care plan every step of the way. The doctors have been talented, responsive and loving and his dad Joe has accepted nothing less than truly patient centered care.  Andrew will often say that he is terrified, but he will allow important procedures to be done, once he and his Dad determine that his physicians have excellent medical knowledge and clinical skills.

We are grateful for the love and support of family, friends, doctors and all of the good people on this earth.  It is because of you and because of Andrew that we fight on.  As Andrew says “It’s amazing that all of these people are on my side.  And guess who is on cancer’s side?  No one.”  We need to move swiftly to get Andrew every treatment he needs to support his fight.
