The brief recent medical history for Andrew started in March when, during Spring Break, he was in an indoor go-cart accident due to the staff who were in charge. Amy and I drove him to the ER at Children’s Hospital in Columbus. While it is an experience no parent or grandparent wants, I was impressed with the hospital. They were quick to assemble a trauma team relative to his perceived injuries. (There were at least 30 professionals in the room with the three of us as they quickly cut off his clothes and assessed Andrew.) Amy and I were able to be with Andrew in the ER and for multiple tests including x-rays, ct, MRI, etc. each time a test was done.
There was no concussion and were no broken bones for Andrew. All injuries were internal, particularly in the pelvic area. This caused Andrew to be hospitalized at Children’s Hospital in Columbus for 2+ weeks while they stabilized his vital signs and injuries. He had little mobility in the hospital or when he arrived back home due to the swelling and the hematomas.
Andrew primarily needs to lie on his back. Joe slept in the room and took care of Andrew every night and many days. Amy took him to physical therapy, appointments with his primary physician and Amy and Joe took him back to Children’s for follow-up testing and to remove his catheter. Andrew was unable to return to school. The school came out and tested Andrew and worked with him.
